Update on the Mandatory BIS Standards for Hinges Introduced by DPIIT
In a significant development aimed at enhancing product quality and consumer safety, the Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), has issued the “Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2025,” effective from March 21, 2025. This Order supersedes the earlier Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

- Mandatory Compliance: All hinges listed must comply with specified Indian Standards (IS) and bear the Standard Mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

- Implementation Date: Compliance will become mandatory starting from July 1, 2025.
- Exemptions: The Order exempts hinges manufactured domestically for export and permits limited imports (up to 200 units annually) for research and development purposes.
- Certification and Enforcement: BIS will serve as the certifying and enforcement authority to ensure compliance.
- Penalties: Non-compliance will attract penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
