CBIC Removes Fees on Transshipment Applications of the imported goods
The Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue, under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), has issued a significant notification (Notification No. 30/2025-Customs (N.T.), dated April 24, 2025) amending the Goods Imported (Conditions of Transshipment) Regulations, 1995.
Key Highlights:
- Waiver of Fees: One of the most significant amendments brought by this notification is the substitution of Regulation 5. According to the new amendment, no fees shall be charged for applications related to the transshipment of imported goods across all customs stations.
- Immediate Effect: This regulatory update is effective immediately from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, aiming to streamline procedures and reduce compliance costs associated with transshipment.
- Regulatory Framework: The amendment derives its authority under section 157, sub-section (3) of section 54, and section 158 of the Customs Act, 1962.
The objective behind this amendment appears to be simplifying administrative processes and facilitating smoother operations in logistics and trade sectors by eliminating the financial burden related to transshipment applications.
This notification aligns with broader efforts by the government to promote ease of doing business in India, particularly in the context of import and logistics operations.
Implications:
- Enhanced efficiency in customs processes
- Reduced operational costs for businesses
- Encouragement for businesses to utilize Indian ports and logistics hubs for international transshipment
