Update on the Mandatory BIS Standards for Nickel Introduced by Ministry of Mines

Dated: 28.04.2025

The Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has recently issued a significant amendment through the Nickel (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024. This amendment, officially published in the Gazette of India on May 3, 2024, introduces a new effective date for the implementation of the Nickel (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

Key Amendment:

  • Revised Implementation Date: The amendment modifies the implementation timeline of the Nickel (Quality Control) Order, 2023. Initially scheduled earlier, the enforcement of quality control measures will now come into effect from December 1, 2024.

Reasons for the Amendment:

This deferment aims to provide additional time for industry stakeholders to adapt and comply with the stringent quality control standards mandated by the original order. The extension of the implementation timeline reflects the government’s consideration of industry readiness and public interest in ensuring smooth compliance and transition.

Implications for Industry:

  • Provides additional preparation time for industries involved in nickel processing and manufacturing.
  • Ensures better compliance with BIS standards by allowing sufficient time for adjustments.
  • Reduces immediate regulatory pressure, allowing for better management of economic and operational resources.

Regulatory Authority:

This amendment is enforced under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in mineral products to safeguard consumer interests and enhance industrial competitiveness.

Next Steps:

Industries are advised to use this extended timeline proactively to align their processes and quality assurance practices with BIS regulations to ensure seamless compliance by December 2024.
