CBIC Extends Customs Duty Exemption on Raw Cotton Imports
In a significant move aimed at addressing public interest, the Government of India has issued Notification No. 36/2025-Customs, dated August 28, 2025, under the Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue). This notification amends the earlier Notification No. 35/2025-Customs, dated August 18, 2025, extending its validity from September 30, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
Key Highlights of the Notification:
- Legal Basis: The amendment is made under the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 25 of the Customs Act, 1962, read with section 124 of the Finance Act, 2021.
- Extension of Validity: The original notification, which was set to expire on September 30, 2025, has now been extended to December 31, 2025. This change ensures continuity in the provisions outlined in Notification No. 35/2025-Customs.
- Public Interest: The Central Government has emphasized that this amendment is necessary in the public interest, reflecting its commitment to addressing the needs of stakeholders and ensuring smooth implementation of customs-related policies.
Implications of the Amendment:
The extension provides additional time for businesses, importers, and exporters to comply with the provisions of Notification No. 35/2025-Customs. It also offers clarity and stability in customs regulations, which is crucial for trade facilitation and economic growth.
Conclusion:
This amendment underscores the Government’s proactive approach to addressing public interest and ensuring seamless operations in customs administration. Stakeholders are advised to take note of the extended timeline and align their activities accordingly.
