Effect of the Notification

This policy amendment aims to regulate the import of silver jewellery and related items, ensuring better oversight and control over the trade of precious metals. The restriction is likely to impact businesses dealing in silver jewellery imports, encouraging domestic production and reducing dependency on foreign markets.

Background

The notification has been issued under the powers conferred by Section 3 and Section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, and in alignment with the Foreign Trade Policy 2023. The decision reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a balanced trade environment and supporting local industries.

What Importers Need to Know

Importers dealing with ITC (HS) codes 71131141 and 71131149 must now apply for authorization to continue their operations. This change is expected to streamline the import process and ensure compliance with the revised policy.

Conclusion

The amendment in the import policy for silver jewellery is a significant step by the Government of India to regulate the trade of precious metals. Businesses involved in the import of these items should take immediate action to align with the new requirements. For further details or assistance, stakeholders can contact the Directorate General of Foreign Trade at dgft@nic.in.
