In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, India and Russia have agreed to deepen trade and cooperation in the agricultural sector. ​ Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan met His Excellency Mr. Dmitry Patrushev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, at Krishi Bhawan on September 26, 2025. ​ The meeting marked a milestone in the longstanding partnership between the two nations, with discussions focusing on enhancing agricultural trade, technical collaboration, and academic exchanges. ​

Key Highlights of the Meeting

1. Strengthening Agricultural Trade: ​ Both sides emphasized the importance of expanding India’s agricultural exports to Russia and improving market access for key products. ​ Shri Chouhan highlighted India’s priorities in ensuring food security, increasing farmer incomes, and promoting access to safe and nutritious food. ​

2. Signing of an MoU: ​ Mr. Dmitry Patrushev expressed Russia’s interest in formalizing the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aiming to deepen agricultural trade ties and technical cooperation. ​

3. Academic and Technological Collaboration: ​ The discussions included plans to enhance academic exchanges and scholarship opportunities for students. ​ Both nations agreed to explore joint initiatives in seed traceability systems, promoting innovation and technology-driven solutions in agriculture. ​

Shared Commitment to Sustainable Growth: ​ Reaffirming the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakamβ€”the world is one familyβ€”Shri Chouhan emphasized the role of international collaboration in ensuring farmer welfare and food security. ​ Both sides committed to sustainable and inclusive growth in agriculture through research, education, and development. ​

Delegations and Representation ​

The meeting saw participation from senior officials of both nations. ​ The Russian delegation included Mr. Maksim Markovich, Deputy Minister of Agriculture; Mr. Denis Alipov, Ambassador of Russia to India; and Mr. Sergey Dankvert, Head of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance. ​ On the Indian side, representatives from the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), and Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) were present. ​
