Dakshina Kannada Declared District Export Hub to Boost Seafood and Cashew Exports

Dated: 03.12.2025

The Government of India has taken a significant step towards enhancing the export potential of Dakshina Kannada by designating it as a District Export Hub (DEH) under the Districts as Export Hubs initiative. This recognition highlights the district’s strong export capabilities, particularly in seafood and cashew, and aims to foster balanced and sustainable economic growth.

Strengthening Local Industry and Global Trade Participation

The DEH initiative is designed to empower districts by identifying their unique export strengths and addressing bottlenecks in logistics, infrastructure, and connectivity. For Dakshina Kannada, the focus is on seafood and cashew exports, which are expected to drive local industry growth, create value-added opportunities, and expand market access for enterprises in the region. This move is set to enhance the district’s participation in global trade and contribute to its long-term development.

Key Measures to Support Exporters

Under the DEH initiative, the Government has introduced several measures to support exporters and mitigate challenges arising from logistics disruptions and international supply chain vulnerabilities. These include:

  1. District Export Action Plans (DEAPs): Comprehensive plans to identify and address logistics gaps such as connectivity issues, warehousing deficits, and testing infrastructure.
  2. Operationalisation of SEPCs and DEPCs: State and District Export Promotion Committees ensure coordinated action among district authorities, customs, logistics providers, MSME bodies, and industry associations.
  3. Infrastructure & Logistics Enhancement: Efforts to improve first-mile connectivity, establish common facility centres, and strengthen linkages to ports and dry ports.
  4. Promotion of E-commerce Exports: Partnerships with platforms like Amazon, Shiprocket, and DHL provide MSMEs with cost-effective shipping alternatives.
  5. Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras (DNKs): Expansion of postal export facilities for documentation, packaging, and small-parcel shipments.
  6. Capacity-Building & Outreach: Awareness programs on logistics planning, export procedures, packaging norms, and compliance requirements.
  7. Monitoring of Export Performance: Regular analysis of district-wise export data to identify challenges and implement responsive interventions.

Infrastructure Development in Dakshina Kannada

A District Export Action Plan (DEAP) has been formulated for Dakshina Kannada, focusing on improving export infrastructure. Key requirements include enhanced first-mile linkages to New Mangalore Port, augmentation of warehousing and consolidation facilities, and support infrastructure for seafood and cashew exports. Additionally, a District Export Promotion Committee (DEPC) has been established to facilitate coordinated action among stakeholders, including exporters, port authorities, customs, and logistics agencies.

Building a Robust Export Ecosystem

The DEH initiative serves as a consultative framework to align district-level export requirements with ongoing infrastructure development efforts. For Dakshina Kannada, this includes leveraging the facilities at New Mangalore Port to strengthen the export ecosystem. By addressing value-chain gaps in processing, packaging, testing, and logistics, the initiative aims to reduce dependency on intermediaries and retain value-chains locally.

Conclusion

The designation of Dakshina Kannada as a District Export Hub is a testament to the Government’s commitment to promoting regional economic growth and enhancing India’s global trade footprint. With targeted interventions and infrastructure development, the district is poised to become a key player in seafood and cashew exports, driving local industry growth and creating new opportunities for businesses and exporters.
