India’s Electronics Manufacturing Revolution: A Decade of Growth and Global Leadership

India has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its electronics manufacturing sector over the past 11 years, emerging as a global leader in mobile phone production and exports. Driven by the visionary initiatives of the Government of India under the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” campaigns, the country has successfully developed a robust ecosystem for electronics manufacturing. This blog delves into the milestones achieved, the policies implemented, and the future prospects of India’s electronics industry.
A Decade of Growth in Electronics Manufacturing
The journey of India’s electronics manufacturing sector has been nothing short of extraordinary. From FY 2014-15 to FY 2024-25, the production of electronics goods has grown sixfold, from ₹1.9 lakh crore to ₹11.3 lakh crore. Similarly, exports of electronics goods have increased eightfold, from ₹0.38 lakh crore to ₹3.3 lakh crore. These numbers reflect the significant strides India has made in becoming a global hub for electronics production.

Mobile Phone Manufacturing: A Game-Changer
One of the most notable achievements is India’s emergence as the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. The production of mobile phones has skyrocketed from ₹0.18 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 to ₹5.5 lakh crore in FY 2024-25—a staggering 28-fold increase. Exports of mobile phones have seen an even more impressive growth, surging 127 times from ₹0.01 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 to ₹2 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. This transformation has turned India from a net importer of mobile phones in 2014 to a net exporter by 2025.
Key Policy Initiatives Driving Growth
The Government of India has implemented several forward-thinking policies to foster the growth of electronics manufacturing:
- Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing (LSEM): Launched in 2020, the PLI scheme has been instrumental in boosting domestic mobile phone production. Between FY 2019-20 and FY 2024-25, mobile phone production more than doubled, and exports increased eightfold. The scheme has attracted investments worth ₹15,172 crore and generated employment for 1,71,448 individuals.
- PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware: Introduced in 2023, this scheme aims to create a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem for IT hardware, including laptops, tablets, and servers. By December 2025, the scheme had achieved a cumulative production of ₹16,531 crore, attracted investments of ₹856.64 crore, and generated 4,776 direct jobs.
- Other Initiatives:
- Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS): Encourages domestic production of critical components.
- Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC and EMC 2.0) Scheme: Supports the development of specialized manufacturing zones.
- Semicon India Programme: Focuses on building a semiconductor ecosystem in India.
- Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order 2017: Prioritizes domestically manufactured products in public procurement.
- Tax Reforms: Includes rationalization of tariff structures and exemptions on basic custom duties for capital goods.
- 100% FDI in Electronics Manufacturing: Encourages foreign investments under applicable laws and regulations.
Year-Wise Production Growth Under PLI Schemes
The PLI schemes have significantly contributed to India’s electronics manufacturing growth. Below are the year-wise production figures:
| Year | Cumulative Production (₹ Cr) | Incremental Production (₹ Cr) |
| FY 2023-24 | 4,95,660 | 2,02,789 |
| FY 2024-25 | 7,66,861 | 2,71,200 |
| FY 2025-26 (Till Dec 2025) | 10,39,218 | 2,44,998 |
India’s Vision for the Future
The Government of India is committed to reducing import dependency, generating employment, and establishing India as a trusted global supply chain hub. With initiatives like the Semicon India Programme and EMC schemes, the focus is on expanding the manufacturing of consumer electronics, industrial electronics, strategic electronics, auto electronics, and telecom equipment.
The success of the PLI schemes and other initiatives has set the stage for India to become a global leader in electronics manufacturing. With continued investments, policy support, and innovation, India is poised to achieve new milestones in the coming years.
Conclusion
India’s journey in electronics manufacturing is a testament to the power of visionary leadership and strategic policymaking. From being an importer of mobile phones to becoming the second-largest manufacturer globally, the country has demonstrated its potential to lead in the electronics sector. As India continues to strengthen its manufacturing ecosystem, the future looks promising for the electronics industry, with immense opportunities for growth, innovation, and global collaboration.
