India–Myanmar Joint Trade Committee: Strengthening Bilateral Trade and Cooperation
The Ninth Meeting of the India–Myanmar Joint Trade Committee (JTC) was successfully held on January 21, 2026, in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. This significant event marked another milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen trade and economic ties between the two neighboring countries. Co-chaired by U Minn Minn, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Myanmar, and Shri Nitin Kumar Yadav, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, India, the meeting brought together representatives from various stakeholder ministries to discuss key issues and opportunities for collaboration.

The discussions during the meeting revolved around several critical areas aimed at enhancing bilateral trade and cooperation. Some of the major topics included:
- Improving Connectivity and Trade Facilitation Both sides emphasized the importance of improving connectivity to facilitate smoother trade operations. The strategic significance of the Tamu–Moreh and Rhi–Zokhawthar border trade posts was highlighted, with India urging Myanmar to expedite the reopening of these land border points. Additionally, the development of an Integrated Check Post at Tamu was proposed to enhance trade efficiency.
- Market Access and Financial Transactions The meeting focused on expanding market access and streamlining financial transactions between the two countries. The promotion of the Rupee–Kyat trade settlement mechanism was discussed as a way to simplify cross-border financial dealings.
- ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to completing the review of AITIGA to make it simpler, balanced, and mutually beneficial. This agreement is seen as a key driver for enhancing trade between India and Myanmar, as well as other ASEAN countries.
- Sectoral Cooperation for Mutual Growth The meeting explored potential areas of cooperation across various sectors, including:
- Textiles: Promoting trade and investment in the textile industry.
- Transport and Connectivity: Enhancing infrastructure to improve trade routes.
- Capacity Building: Sharing knowledge and expertise to strengthen human resources.
- Customs and Border Management: Streamlining processes for efficient trade.
- Shipping and Power: Collaborating on energy and maritime transport projects.
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Leveraging technology for development.
- Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs): Supporting small businesses for mutual growth.
- Health and Pharmaceuticals: Expanding cooperation in healthcare and medicine.
- Agriculture: Boosting trade in agricultural products, including pulses and beans.
Bilateral Trade Growth and Future Goals
India and Myanmar have witnessed a positive growth trajectory in bilateral trade, which reached USD 2.15 billion during 2024–25. Recognizing the immense potential for further expansion, both sides have set an ambitious target to scale trade to USD 5 billion by 2030. Myanmar expressed appreciation for India’s supportive policy environment, particularly in the pulses and beans sector, which has been a key export area for Myanmar.
Strengthening Collaboration and Follow-Up Actions
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation across all discussed areas. Regular communication among relevant agencies was emphasized to ensure effective follow-up actions. The shared vision of mutual growth and collaboration was reaffirmed, with both nations committed to working together to achieve long-term gains.
