A New Era of Economic Partnership โ€‹

The India-EU FTA is designed to address contemporary global challenges while fostering deeper market integration between the worldโ€™s 4th and 2nd largest economies. โ€‹ It provides unprecedented market access for over 99% of Indiaโ€™s exports by trade value, while safeguarding sensitive sectors and aligning with Indiaโ€™s developmental priorities. โ€‹ This agreement is expected to elevate India-EU relations into a modern, multifaceted partnership, creating a stable and predictable environment for businesses to thrive. โ€‹

Empowering Businesses and Securing the Future โ€‹

The FTA offers seamless market access, enabling Indian businesses, including MSMEs, to integrate into European value chains and plan long-term investments. โ€‹ India has secured preferential access to European markets across 97% of tariff lines, covering 99.5% of trade value. โ€‹ Key highlights include:

  • Immediate duty elimination for 70.4% of tariff lines, covering 90.7% of Indiaโ€™s exports in labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, footwear, tea, coffee, spices, sports goods, toys, gems and jewellery, and marine products. โ€‹
  • Zero duty access over 3-5 years for 20.3% of tariff lines, including processed food items, arms and ammunition, and certain marine products. โ€‹
  • Preferential access through tariff reduction for 6.1% of tariff lines, including poultry products, preserved vegetables, bakery products, and TRQs for cars, steel, and certain shrimp/prawn products. โ€‹

These measures will enhance the competitiveness of Indian exports, create job opportunities, and deepen integration into global and European value chains. โ€‹

Driving Agricultural Growth and Farmer Livelihoods โ€‹

The FTA is set to revolutionize Indiaโ€™s agricultural and processed food sector by providing preferential market access for products such as tea, coffee, spices, grapes, gherkins, cucumbers, dried onion, fresh vegetables, and fruits. โ€‹ This will strengthen farmersโ€™ incomes, reinforce rural livelihoods, and elevate the global competitiveness of Indian agricultural products. โ€‹ Strategic safeguards for sensitive sectors like dairy, cereals, poultry, and certain fruits and vegetables ensure export growth while protecting domestic priorities. โ€‹

  5. Chemicals: Zero duty on 97.5% of Indiaโ€™s chemical export basket will boost competitiveness in the EUโ€™s INR 43.57 Lakh Crore (USD 500 billion) chemical market, promoting high-value, sustainable products and generating employment.

Services: The Key Growth Driver โ€‹

Empowering Indian Talent โ€‹

The FTA establishes a comprehensive mobility framework for professionals, including business visitors, intra-corporate transferees, contractual service suppliers, and independent professionals. โ€‹ This framework eases the movement of employees and their families, creating expanded opportunities for Indian professionals in IT, R&D, higher education, and other sectors. โ€‹

Promoting Indian Traditional Medicine โ€‹
