Operationalisation of Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) for Supply Chain Resilience

Dated: 05.03.2026

In response to the evolving global geopolitical landscape and its impact on India’s trade and supply chains, the Government of India has taken a proactive step to ensure the resilience of its supply chain network. โ€‹ On March 3, 2026, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, issued Trade Notice No. โ€‹ 30/2025-26, announcing the operationalisation of an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) for Supply Chain Resilience. โ€‹ This initiative aims to address supply chain disruptions and safeguard India’s export and import sectors. โ€‹

Background

The decision to establish the IMG was made during a meeting held on March 2, 2026, chaired by the Special Secretary of the Department of Commerce and Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). โ€‹ The meeting focused on assessing the impact of ongoing geopolitical developments on India’s exports, particularly disruptions in global supply chains. โ€‹ Recognizing the need for a coordinated approach, the IMG was constituted under the Department of Commerce. โ€‹

Objectives of the Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) โ€‹

The IMG has been tasked with several critical responsibilities to ensure the resilience of India’s supply chains. โ€‹ These include:

  1. Monitoring Global Developments: The IMG will closely track international events and trends that may affect supply chains, ensuring timely identification of potential risks. โ€‹
  2. Assessing Vulnerabilities: The group will evaluate sector-wise export and critical import vulnerabilities to identify areas that require immediate attention. โ€‹
  3. Facilitating Coordination: The IMG will act as a bridge between various Ministries and Departments, ensuring seamless coordination to address supply chain challenges. โ€‹
  4. Stakeholder Engagement: The group will engage with industry stakeholders, including Export Promotion Councils, to gather insights and address concerns. โ€‹
  5. Recommending Mitigation Measures: Based on its assessments, the IMG will propose actionable strategies to mitigate risks and enhance supply chain resilience. โ€‹

Internal Coordination Mechanism โ€‹

To complement the efforts of the IMG, the DGFT has established an internal coordination mechanism. โ€‹ This system will enable real-time tracking of supply chain issues and facilitate inter-agency collaboration, ensuring swift and effective responses to emerging challenges. โ€‹

Role of Trade and Industry Stakeholders โ€‹

The DGFT has invited trade and industry stakeholders to actively participate in this initiative. โ€‹ Stakeholders are encouraged to report specific issues related to supply chain disruptions to the DGFT at adg1-dgft@gov.in. โ€‹ These inputs will be consolidated, monitored, and examined for appropriate action and coordination. โ€‹

Conclusion

The operationalisation of the Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) for Supply Chain Resilience is a significant step by the Government of India to safeguard the nation’s trade interests amidst global uncertainties. โ€‹ By fostering collaboration among various ministries, engaging stakeholders, and implementing robust mitigation measures, the IMG aims to ensure the stability and growth of India’s export and import sectors. โ€‹ This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s position in the global trade ecosystem and protecting its economic interests.
