In a significant development for India’s global trade ambitions, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, highlighted the transformative impact of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) on the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and medical technology sectors. Speaking at the Post Budget Webinar 2026 titled Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas: Fulfilling Aspiration of People in New Delhi, Shri Goyal emphasized how FTAs are paving the way for India to strengthen its position as a global trade leader and solidify its reputation as the “Pharmacy of the World.”

India’s Expanding FTA Network

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has signed nine FTAs in the past three to three-and-a-half years, with five of these agreements concluded in the last 12 months. These FTAs have opened nearly two-thirds of global trade to India, providing preferential access to international markets with lower duties and expanded opportunities. Shri Goyal noted that these agreements are not limited to large industries but also benefit farmers, fishermen, MSMEs, small industries, and traders.

India’s trade engagement is expanding across multiple regions, including major economies such as the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Agreements have also been signed with the United Arab Emirates and Oman, while all six Gulf Cooperation Council countries have expressed interest in entering into trade agreements with India. Discussions with Canada, Mercosur countries in Latin America, and the Eurasian Economic Union are also progressing rapidly.

Strengthening India’s Role as the ‘Pharmacy of the World’

India’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors have long been recognized for their global impact, and FTAs are further enhancing their reach. Shri Goyal highlighted that the scale of India’s trade in these sectors is now greater than ever before, with new opportunities emerging for innovation and emerging technologies. The med-tech sector, which manufactures medical equipment, is also poised to benefit significantly from these agreements.

The Minister emphasized the importance of building a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem that integrates manufacturing, innovation, startups, and hospitals. Such an ecosystem will enable India to fully leverage the opportunities created by FTAs. MSMEs, in particular, will play a crucial role in this process by focusing on quality upgradation and strengthening testing facilities. This will ensure that Indian products meet global standards, enhancing the “Brand India” image and showcasing the country’s capabilities on the world stage.

Vision for Viksit Bharat by 2047

Shri Goyal outlined five priority areas to guide India’s journey during the Amrit Kaal towards achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. He stressed that while the government can create pathways and opportunities, the success of FTAs ultimately depends on active participation from businesses and institutions.

The Minister also highlighted the need to connect the healthcare sector more strongly with exports. By focusing on skill development, India can train skilled professionals such as caregivers and nurses, who are in high demand both domestically and internationally. This will not only support exports but also increase remittances and enhance the global presence of Indian products and services.

Embracing Digital Health and Emerging Technologies

Shri Goyal underscored the importance of digital health and emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). He encouraged the adoption of AI as an enabling technology to promote telemedicine, improve diagnostics, and deliver better healthcare services to India’s population of 1.4 billion people. India’s talent pool in applied technologies and AI-driven solutions positions the country to lead in this domain.

Global Recognition of Traditional Medicine

India’s traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Yoga, are gaining increasing recognition worldwide. Shri Goyal stressed the need to expand research, standardize these systems internationally, and promote them globally through collaborations with other countries. This will further enhance India’s global influence in the healthcare sector.

A Healthy India for a Developed India

Shri Goyal concluded by emphasizing that a healthy India is the foundation of a developed India. He expressed confidence that collective efforts in healthcare, innovation, and trade will help India emerge as a global leader and realize the vision of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Conclusion

India’s proactive approach to signing FTAs is unlocking unprecedented opportunities for the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and med-tech sectors. By fostering innovation, skill development, and global collaboration, India is well on its way to solidifying its position as a global economic powerhouse. With a strong foundation laid under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is poised to achieve its ambitious vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
