Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order- 2026: Ensuring Quality Standards in India
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, has issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2026, under the powers conferred by Section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This order supersedes the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025, and aims to ensure the quality and standardization of aluminium and aluminium alloy products in India. 1. Short Title and Commencement
The order is officially titled the βAluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2026.β It came into effect on the date of its publication in the official Gazette, i.e., March 11, 2026.
2. Compulsory Use of Standard Mark
The order mandates that all goods or articles specified in the provided table must conform to the corresponding Indian Standards and bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This ensures that the products meet the quality benchmarks set by BIS.
- Exported Goods: The order does not apply to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export purposes.
- Micro and Small Enterprises: Micro and small enterprises, as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, are given a grace period to comply with the standards. The implementation dates for these enterprises are specified in the table.
- Imported Goods for R&D: Goods or articles imported up to 200 kilograms annually for research and development purposes by manufacturers of aluminium products are exempt, provided:
- They are not sold commercially and are disposed of as scrap.
- Manufacturers maintain year-wise records of such imports and submit them to the Central Government.
3. Certification and Enforcement Authority
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is designated as the certifying and enforcing authority for the goods and articles specified in the order.
4. Penalty for Contravention
Any person who contravenes the provisions of this order will be punishable under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
Scope of the Order
The order covers a wide range of aluminium and aluminium alloy products, including but not limited to:
- Aluminium alloy tubes for irrigation purposes (welded and extruded).
- EC Grade Aluminium Rods produced by continuous casting and rolling.
- Aluminium and aluminium alloy foil for pharmaceutical packaging.
- Aluminium composite panels.
- Corrugated aluminium sheets.
- Aluminium alloy forging stock and forgings for aerospace applications.
- Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy bars, rods, sections, plates, sheets, wires, and rivet stock for general engineering purposes.
- Wrought aluminium wire for electrical purposes.
- Aluminium and aluminium alloys for the manufacture of utensils.
- Aluminium and aluminium alloy products for electrical applications.
Implementation Timeline
The order specifies different implementation timelines for various categories of enterprises:
- General Enterprises (Other than Micro and Small Enterprises):
- Immediate implementation for most products.
- For certain products, implementation begins on December 1, 2026.
- Small Enterprises:
- Immediate implementation for most products.
- For certain products, implementation begins on March 1, 2027.
- Micro Enterprises:
- Immediate implementation for most products.
- For certain products, implementation begins on June 1, 2027.
