Mandatory BIS enforced on Standalone Hard Disk Drives

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced a significant amendment to the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.” This update specifically addresses the registration standards for standalone hard disk drives, aiming to enhance safety and compliance within the electronics sector.

Key Highlights of the Amendment

1. Updated Registration Requirement
   • The entry at Serial No. 50 in the Schedule of the Compulsory Registration Order has been revised.
   • The new entry now reads: “Standalone Hard Disk Drives”.
2. Applicable Indian Standard
   • Standalone hard disk drives must now comply with IS 13252: Part 1: 2010.
   • This standard is titled “Information technology equipment safety part 1 general requirements” and sets forth comprehensive safety requirements for IT equipment.
3. Scope of Amendment
   • The amendment applies to all standalone hard disk drives except USB Type External Hard Disk Drives.
   • USB Type External Hard Disk Drives will continue to be governed by the existing notified provisions and are not affected by this change.
   • For all other standalone HDDs, the new provisions will be enforced starting 5 November.
