What is the TRQ Scheme?

The Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) scheme allows a specified quantity of a product to be imported or exported at a lower tariff rate, with higher tariffs applied to quantities exceeding the quota. For Indian sugar exporters, the TRQ scheme provides preferential access to the US market, supporting both the domestic sugar industry and bilateral trade relations.

How Exporters Can Benefit

  • Market Access: Indian sugar exporters can take advantage of the allocated quota to access the US market with reduced tariffs.
  • Regulatory Clarity: The clear guidelines and implementing agency (APEDA) streamline the export process.
  • Preferential Treatment: With the Certificate of Origin, exporters can benefit from preferential tariff rates in the US.

Steps for Exporters

  1. Obtain Recommendation from APEDA: Ensure your entity and quantity are recommended by APEDA.
  2. Apply for Certificate of Origin: Submit the required documentation to the Additional Director General of Foreign Trade, Mumbai.
  3. Comply with All Certification and Reporting Requirements: Follow all guidelines as per the relevant notifications.

Conclusion

This allocation reaffirms India’s commitment to supporting its sugar industry and strengthening trade ties with the United States. Exporters are encouraged to follow the outlined procedures to maximize the benefits of this opportunity.
