DGFT Automatically Extends TRQ Authorisation Validity for Gold Imports under India-UAE CEPA Until September 2026
The Government of India has announced a significant update for gold importers operating under the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This article provides a detailed overview of the recent extension of the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) Authorisation validity, its implications, and what stakeholders need to know.
Background: India-UAE CEPA and Gold Imports
The India-UAE CEPA is a bilateral trade agreement designed to facilitate smoother and more advantageous trade between India and the United Arab Emirates. One of the key features of this agreement is the provision for importing gold under a specified Tariff Head (CTH 7108) with preferential terms, managed through TRQ Authorisations issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
Key Update: Extension of TRQ Authorisation Validity
On July 1, 2026, the DGFT issued Public Notice No. 18/2026-27, officially extending the validity of TRQ Authorisations for gold imports under CTH 7108. The main points of this extension are:
- Extended Validity Period
- TRQ Authorisations issued in the financial year 2025-26, which were previously valid until June 30, 2026, are now automatically extended up to September 30, 2026.
- Automatic Extension
- Importers do not need to submit any separate application, pay a composition fee, or seek amendments or endorsements to benefit from this extension. The process is entirely automatic for all eligible authorisations.
- Scope of the Extension
- The extension applies specifically to TRQ Authorisations for gold imports under the India-UAE CEPA, issued in FY 2025-26.
Implications for Gold Importers
- Operational Continuity: Importers can continue to import gold under the existing authorisations without interruption until the new deadline.
- No Additional Paperwork: The automatic nature of the extension reduces administrative burden and ensures a seamless transition.
- Strategic Planning: Businesses can plan their import activities with greater certainty, knowing that their authorisations remain valid for an extended period.
Official Communication
This extension was enacted under the powers granted by the Foreign Trade Policy 2023 and is a continuation of previous public notices. The DGFT, through its official channels, has clarified that the effect of this notice is to automatically extend the validity of relevant TRQ Authorisations up to September 30, 2026.
